MAJOR PROJECTS FORUM
It was great to get to the annual Major Projects Forum with Sean (BIEDO Board Member) and Leanne (Administration Officer), along with a range of colleagues for our yearly update of major projects in the Wide Bay. It was great to especially catch up on Environmental and Social Governance (ESG), especially knowing the impact on Agribusinesses. We congratulate the major infrastructure projects on show, it really helped us to understand how businesses in the Burnett Inland can benefit from an environment, social and governance (ESG) strategy.

TRADE AND INVESTMENT QUEENSLAND
We have travelled across the Burnett Inland (and some) since our last newsletter. It was so great to meet with Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ) and international trade commissioners a couple of weeks ago at Dusty Hill, Moffatdale. We were among a range of international exporters, with some key connections and conversations had about improving trade for the region.

(You'll have noted we have some new TIQ resources on our website, be sure to check them out)

FLAVOURS OF THE BURNETT INLAND
It has been really difficult for communities to hold festivals over the last few years, if it hasn't been health, it's been the weather. Nikki from BIEDO  has been championing the Munduberra Blueberry Festival here in the office, and out in the community, with the first one just held on 22nd October. They did experience some rain, but it didn't dampen any spirits. Mundubbera was buzzing, the Blueberries were proudly on show, and as you know, we were banging the drum about being Queensland's next biggest food bowl! Take a look at some of the photo's here.

What a delicious, productive region we live in!

EVENTS HELP MAKE OUR BURNETT INLAND ECONOMY GO ROUND

Another big event was hosted in the Burnett Inland last week, this time in Murgon. Celebrating 10 years, the muster included headlining artists Amber Lawrence, Felicity Urquhart, Josh Cunningham and Adam Harvey, local artists, walk-up artists, poets, and more. Congratultations on 10 years and on delivering a solid economic boost to Murgon and the region!

We also really enjoyed the
South Burnett Health & Community Services Expo at the Kingaroy’s Town Hall and the Eidsvold Community Day. The events are about boosting access and knowledge, and are always a great day to be part of - well done.

VISIONARY WOMEN

In our second installment of our visionary women event series, the Heart of Success was held on the 25th of the October 2022 in Munduberra. We have recieved wonderful reports from those who have attended these workshops! This workshop was about maintaining a positive mindset during the hard times, dispelling limiting beliefs and how to stop procrasination once and for all. Keep an eye out on our socials for the highlights - including the Queensland Country Hour interview here! Stay tuned for the release of our next workshop dates.

See you next newsletter!
That's it for me. We look forward to the next month ahead in working with you to achieve ongoing economic development for our Burnett Inland.

The South Burnett Grazier network would like to remind the industry of the regulations that come into force in December 2022.

Below is the information PDF, and a link for further information.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reef protection regulations in the Great Barrier Reef regions Grazing requirements Effective from 1 December 2019

  • The Reef protection regulations started on 1 December 2019 and will be rolled out over five years.
  • The regulations address land-based sources of water pollution to the Great Barrier Reef. This includes all industrial and agricultural activities that release nutrients and sediment across the Cape York, Wet Tropics, Burdekin, Mackay Whitsunday, Fitzroy and Burnett Mary regions.

Why are regulations required for grazing?

  • Over time, unsustainable grazing practices reduce pasture and ground cover which increases the risk of valuable top soil being lost when it rains. Reduced ground cover also increases overland flow causing gully and streambank erosion and sediment and nutrient run-off to waterways.
  • Ground cover is a key indicator of land condition and refers to pasture plants, plant litter, tree leaf litter, twigs and woody debris that can protect the soil surface from erosion.
  • The minimum practice agricultural standards for grazing focus on retaining and improving ground cover and land condition to minimise soil loss.
  • The Queensland Government has made a commitment that the minimum practice agricultural standards will remain substantially unchanged until 2024.

What are the requirements for graziers?

  • Under the Reef protection regulations, all graziers in the Wet Tropics, Burdekin, Mackay Whitsunday, Fitzroy and Burnett Mary regions need to:
  1. keep general records since 1 December 2019, for example of fertilisers applied to land
  2. comply with minimum practice agricultural standards in the Burdekin and Fitzroy regions now and in the Wet Tropics, Mackay Whitsunday and Burnett Mary regions from 1 December 2022.

Why are existing producers in the Cape York region excluded from the requirements?

  • The general record keeping requirements and minimum practice agricultural standards do not apply to producers in the Cape York region as the region has met its water quality targets.
  • However, any new or expanding commercial cropping and horticulture activities in the Cape York region on five hectares or more of land that does not have a cropping history requires an environmental authority (permit) before the activity or any work takes place.
  • A cropping history is when the land has been used for cropping or horticultural activities during three out of the last 10 years.

For detailed information on this requirement, please refer to the Requirements for new or expanding cropping and horticulture activities factsheet available online at www.qld.gov.au/ReefRegulations OR to find the FULL Grazing fact sheet, click here.
